Why Did Vikings Appear Out of Nowhere?
Until the 700s, Scandinavians were little more than an exotic curiosity to the rest of Europeans. Then, they burst into its history, raiding Paris, settling Normandy, conquering Mediterranean kingdoms, and reaching America and the Black Sea.
Why them, and why then? Every sea is eventually claimed by someone, and once Rome's navy was gone from the North Sea, nobody controlled it. Scandinavia had all three ingredients for expanding by sea: a growing population thanks to advances in iron and agriculture, little room to grow on land, and rules that kept land within families, so younger sons inherited nothing, and had nothing to offer potential brides.
Landless young men had nowhere to go but the sea. This poster captures that moment, with a longship leaving the cold, crowded coast behind. Based on the article, Why Did Vikings Appear Out of Nowhere?
