Greek temples had a problem: Stone is strong when squeezed but weak when stretched, so to carry the weight of every stone beam, they needed a forest of columns. That left little room inside.

What if you dreamed of a huge indoor space? The Romans solved it by perfecting borrowed ideas: The arch turned tension into compression; arches became vaults, and vaults became domes. Concrete, poured into wooden molds, could be made at scale anywhere in the empire, with lighter volcanic stone near the top.

The pinnacle of this was the Pantheon: its 43-meter dome stayed the largest in the world for 1,300 years. Igor Brala's poster shows it under construction, every one of those inventions at work.
